Monday Distractions

I knew our lovely 3-day holiday of rooftop restaurants and spectacular sights was over when my alarm went off at 5:45 am for our first rooftop yoga class. It's optional, but of course I won't pass up the chance to do sun salutations at dawn in India with a real instructor, as opposed to library DVDs in my basement back home. It's a bit hard to take seriously though, with an instructor that's too serious and 10 teenagers that are barely awake. And this was the traditional sort of practice - chanting om while holding poses that are actually meant to be painful - rather than the nice Westernized fluid stretching routine I'm used to. I was hoping to be relaxed and energized for my second week of school, but unfortunately I was just deprived of sleep and the memory of my lesson plans.

And today was definitely not a good day to be tired - my class forgot how to behave over the weekend, I ran out of stickers near the beginning of class, and I couldn't hold their attention long enough to explain games and activities that would keep them from misbehaving out of boredom.

This seemed to be the norm for most of us. Hopefully the fresh batch of stickers and coloring worksheets I have mixed into tomorrow's plan do the trick. It's a delicate combination of my energy and creativity, and their attention (or lack of such). I'm definitely going to bed early tonight, so that I can handle tomorrow!

Hi Honey!!!
Wow, what a trip you had! In the movie, Romancing the Stone, they showed going through mountains on one track roads. I pictured that in your writing. Isn't our God great with his presence in you at all times!

Yes, did you buy a sari? How is Noelle doing? I remember the movie Octopussy. It was beautiful there. Glad you got out to some nice places.

I know what you mean...I cannot teach tired. Too many times I've had to with all the grading, meetings, running the house, etc. I just don't have the patience if I am tired. Hope today was better.

Oh, the Suburban Lifestyles came out and the Summer Theater is doing "Beauty and the Beast" and Jolene Plotski is directing. Ana from RHS is Belle, Andy Huber is assistant director, and Jim Murray (Allie's brother) is Luminear. It is showing at RHS! Unfortunately the show is the weekend before you get home. :-( I think I will go see it if I get ticket.

We went to your second cousin Joel Johnson's wedding Saturday. He is one year older than you. It was an outdoor garden wedding at the bride's home. Very mid-Michigan country. Nice people. Girls wore pretty princess style, strapless black mid-calf length dresses. The flowers were yellow and orange gerber daisies, even on the groomsman. Her uncle married them, quoted bible verses, exchanges vows and in 12 min. they were married. Auntie and Grandma's comments were memorable--doesn't take long to get married does it? Reception was Pirates of the Carribean theme. Chocolate coins with sand, shells and candles for centerpieces. Wedding cake was a statue of Capt. Jack on the top of a ships mast. The cake was actually a dock where he was stepping onto from a movie scene. They are honeymooning for 8 days at Disney World and doing all the theme parks. He loves her and she seems nice.

The best part was on the way home. Grandma showed me Crist's house and we tool M21 home through St. John. Very nice town, beautiful big churches. Anyway sunset was pink and gorgeous. Then we were driving through fields of summer wheat and soybeans. I started seeing fireflies at the side of the road. As it got darker, there were millions of them in the fields. I was so amazed at the sight. Then we were driving through fireflies like a space ship through the galaxies. As the fireflies hit the windshield, they continued to glow in flouresent green!!!!!! What a memory!
Daddy's comment--"I guess they like wheat." He is back to work today.

Hi Mom :)

Tomorrow afternoon Noelle and I, along with a few other girls, are going to go get saris... I wasn't going to at first because I won't wear it often once I'm home - but then I thought, "I'm in India! Why not?" I'll write about that probably tomorrow evening.

The landscapes here are endlessly breathtaking, and I do indeed feel the majesty of God's creation in them. I think that was the underlying meaning of what I was trying to say in that entry. I feel it far more in nature than in the Hindu and Jain temples we visit - these are beautiful, but imcredibly empty-feeling.

I was laughing out loud when I read about the fireflies splatting across the windshield! And I hope you get to see SMT, Elyse told me about it before we left and I was sad I wouldn't be able to go.

I have to go now, the rickshaws have arrived to take us to school! Love you and miss you and Daddy both.

Love, Christiana
